Chiropractic Care During Menopause: Supporting Your Body Through the Change
Chiropractic Care During Menopause: Supporting Your Body Through the Change
Hot flashes and changing periods may get most of the attention, but menopause can affect much more than that.
Many women entering perimenopause and menopause start noticing changes in their bodies that they weren't expecting: joints feel stiffer, muscles seem tighter, old injuries start talking again, workouts take longer to recover from, or aches and pains appear that seemingly came out of nowhere.
And no you didn't necessarily just "sleep wrong."
Hormones affect your musculoskeletal system, too
Estrogen has effects throughout the body, including our bones, muscles, joints, tendons and other connective tissues.
During perimenopause, estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and eventually decline. At the same time, women can experience changes in muscle mass, bone density, inflammation, sleep and recovery.
For some women, that can show up as:
Increased joint pain or stiffness
Neck, back, hip or shoulder discomfort
More muscle tension
Changes in flexibility and mobility
Tendon irritation
Longer recovery after exercise
Old injuries becoming symptomatic again
Feeling like their body simply doesn't move the way it used to
These changes don't mean your body is falling apart. But they may mean that what worked for your body at 30 isn't exactly what it needs at 45, 50 or 60.
Where does chiropractic care fit?
Chiropractic care doesn't change your estrogen levels or "fix" menopause.
What it can do is help address some of the musculoskeletal changes and discomfort that may occur during this stage of life.
At Cloud Chiropractic, we look at how your joints are moving, how your muscles and connective tissues are functioning, and whether certain areas of your body are compensating for others.
Care may include chiropractic adjustments or mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, CranioSacral therapy, mobility work and recommendations for movement or strengthening based on what your body actually needs.
The goal isn't simply to make something "pop."
The goal is to help you move well enough to keep moving.
Staying active becomes even more important
One of the biggest reasons we care about addressing pain and mobility during menopause is that movement becomes incredibly valuable during this stage of life.
Women naturally begin losing muscle and bone mass as they age, and the hormonal changes surrounding menopause can accelerate those changes.
Strength training, weight-bearing exercise, walking and regular physical activity can help support muscle, bone, balance and long-term function.
But there's an obvious problem:
It's hard to stay active when your hip hurts every time you walk.
It's hard to strength train when your shoulder doesn't move comfortably.
And it's hard to prioritize exercise when your back hurts after every workout.
This is where chiropractic care and bodywork can become part of a bigger menopause wellness strategy—helping identify and address barriers that are making movement uncomfortable.
Recovery may need to look different, too
You may also notice that your body doesn't bounce back from activity quite as quickly as it once did.
That doesn't automatically mean you should stop doing the things you love.
It might mean your body needs a little more attention to recovery, mobility, strength progression, sleep, hydration and nutrition. Sometimes it also means adjusting how much you're doing at once instead of repeatedly pushing through pain.
We want women to continue hiking, lifting weights, skiing, biking, running, gardening, traveling and doing whatever makes them feel like themselves.
The answer isn't necessarily do less.
Sometimes it's support your body differently.
Menopause deserves a bigger conversation
For a long time, menopause has been treated as something women simply have to get through.
We think women deserve better information than that.
Understanding what's happening in your body gives you the opportunity to make intentional choices about strength, movement, recovery and healthcare during this transition.
Chiropractic care isn't the answer to every menopause symptom—and it shouldn't be presented that way. But for women experiencing new aches, stiffness, mobility changes or musculoskeletal pain during perimenopause and menopause, it can be one helpful part of a much bigger picture.
Because the goal isn't to get your 25-year-old body back.
It's to build a strong, mobile and resilient body that carries you through the next several decades.
Menopause Circle - Camas Library - October 27
Cloud Chiropractic is excited to be joining the upcoming Menopause Circle at the Camas Library on October 27.
We'll be talking about how hormonal changes can affect joints, muscles, connective tissue, pain and recovery and, most importantly, practical ways you can support your body through this stage of life.
We believe there should be more conversations about menopause, more good information, and a lot less "I guess this is just what happens when you get older."
Your body is changing.
Let's learn how to take care of it.
